| Summary: |
This is an excellent summary of the state of member care in missions in the late 1990s with some suggestions for further development. The list of references is long and valuable. It is must reading for anyone wanting to learn about the current state of member care. |

The essence of the ministry of many member care workers can be summarized in the acronym "PIPE" (as in plumbing pipes), which stands for "psychologically-informed pastoral encouragement."
Intermittent, short-term counseling is frequently the main way to interact with many field personnel. I will typically see a person once a year on the field or at a conference for some informal or formal counseling, follow it up with some e-mail consultation, and then see him or her a year later. E-mail has been an extremely helpful addition, and developing good consultation skills via an e-mail forum is becoming standard for member care providers.
In the world of missions and member care, some of the choicest servants are unheard of, not necessarily professionally trained, and not usually invited to be plenary speakers at conferences. May God give us grace to follow their examples of sacrifice, and do our part in supporting them in their most holy work. |
