Gems: If I force one of my Puerto Rican students to look at me, what I'm doing is forcing him to give me a message of defiance, because in the Puerto Rican culture, to look the authority in the eye is an indication of defiance. I hadn't learned to live in both cultures, I had adjusted to the Puerto Rican culture but hadn't recognized that I had to be sensitive in stepping back into the U. S. culture.
