Title: Conflict or connection: Interpersonal relationships in cross-cultural settings.

Editor:
Pub. Data: Wheaton, IL: Evangelical Missions Information Service.    1996
Pub. Type: Book      141 pages
Summary: A very good book on relationships with many different types of people. The first four chapters and the last six chapters are particularly about mental health issues.
Gems: You say, "I cannot make a decision now." You can dialogue with missionary peers. You should become acquainted with the dynamics associated with gift-giving in that particular culture. Our overall guiding principle is to take our cues from the local people who can accurately interpret the situation for us. Giving puts in motion a rule by which the thing received is obligatorily returned in kind or intention. Wherever generosity of giving, teaching, and helping is of an unconditional character, the recipient must be able to return the gift or some equivalent in order to remain his own respectable self. Otherwise, he will begin seeing himself as inferior to the giver; his personal sense of worth is downgraded, and instead of being grateful, he will be bitter.
