| Summary: |
This article is a discussion between the four authors about six questions related to the advantages and disadvantages of long and short home assignments. |
| Gems: |
In my opinion, the biggest factor is not the length of time for home assignments, but the frequency of them. I've become increasingly concerned about the rise of the nine-months -in-the-host-culture, three-months-in-the passport-culture cycle that more families and organizations are adopting. I'm concerned because: (1) the child gets an unrealistic view of his passport culture-nothing more than fun and games, (2) every family member is in perpetual transition, and (3) the family never becomes integrated into the host culture, and the kids never become integrated in either the host of passport cultures. |
| Outline: |
Discussion of the following topics:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of short-term home assignments?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of year-long home assignments?
What are the educational implications of each type of home assignment?
What are the long-term implications for reentry or returning for college and university?
What factors do you advise parents to consider in making this decision?
What else besides length of time in a person's passport culture makes a significant difference in long-term reentry for college? |
