Summary: |
A good research study showing that self-esteem was positively correlated with perceived approval of others, parental and houseparental acceptance, and identification with parents. Correlates of negative attention-seeking dependency and passive approval-seeking dependency were also noted. There were no significant differences between the early, late, and nonboarders on any of the relevant variables, although, for those who boarded, there was a significant positive correlation between number of years boarding and self-esteem. |
Summary: |
A report of a survey made to see which of Smith's (1985) criticisms other missionaries felt were relevant to them. Rushed visits by home executives and lack of pastoral care were at the top of the list, closely followed by ineffective recruitment and screening. Criticism for not "going native" home executives being out of tune with the basic purpose of missions and too much work piled on by the home office were at the bottom.
